Major break? →← Change of plans

Okay, this has gone beyond suspicious. I can believe the phone lines might be down. I can even accept that there was an accidental chemical spill outside of town.

But this is one coincidence too many. Now I’m just getting pissed off.

As promised, my friend called me to fill me in on what happened. Apparently he and his friends made it to within about 25 miles of Piedmont, only to get stopped by armed officials in military vehicles. When he pushed the soldiers for some explanation, they said that it was a standard procedure, but that he wouldn’t be allowed to pass under any conditions.

Apparently he tried to call and tell me what was going on, but wasn’t able to get a signal on his cell phone. (No surprise there, really. No one in Piedmont has a cell phone, because the mountains in the area make it impossible to get reception.) He tried to get a close-up picture of the officials, who threatened to confiscate his phone, or worse, if he didn’t turn around and leave.

At that point, he detoured through a number of back roads, figuring he could just hit Piedmont from another access junction… only to find that similar vehicles were stationed there too. But at least this time, he was able to grab a picture with his phone:

I don’t know what to make of this, but it now looks like some of you are right… the military is involved in this somehow. But what the hell could be going on that results in a military blockade around a nowhere town like Piedmont?

The only thing that makes me feel a little better is that there were so few of them. If it was really serious, wouldn’t there be a larger group of them…?

  1. Don’t listen to Ben…he’s one of them. He’s just trying to make you feel secure.

  2. I think that’s kinda scary. I also think the more people know the better so I’m gonna tell some friends of mine.

  3. I would love to find out myself.
This sounds really creepy. LIke fleshing-eating zombie creepy. Like “Hurry and let’s organize a caravan to get the heck outta Dodge” creepy. Or “Don’t go and pee by yourself” creepy.

Sorry…imagination runs away with me sometimes.

  5. Good Morning Andrew,
Standard procedure? I suppose having a military blockade is standard for every little mountain town (sheesh). Wheither it is a few personnel on blockade detail or a full battalion, you can bet your hind quarters that the closer you get to town, the more military you are going to find.
So now you know, something out of the ordinary has happened. Your next question is…what? Whatever it is, it is not good and it is not natural. I think you know by now that you are not going to find out anything through the media. You haven’t said but I am assuming that no other press releases have been given out. Piedmont has been swept under the rug.
A question…if you should elect to go there, how are you going to communicate with us, your loyal advisors. I was really gung-ho about you going until that thought smacked my brain. If there is no cell phone service and a laptop doesn’t seem feasible, what is left? Radio? Walkie talkie? Perhaps you should check out your local army surplus store. It’s a thought. Truly, I still think you should go, just look at it from all angles and plan, plan, plan.
    Good Luck

  6. ummmm. check it out for yourself. If you’re not having to evacuate, then it’s probably something that will quickly pass and nothing to worry about. But wait…what would happen if you came from the opposite direction?

  7. Have you or your friend tried getting in touch with a reporter or something? You don’t have much info, but what you do have might spell story for someone over at CNN or NNT. That Nash guy at NNT loves this kind of stuff, though the NNT site seems to be down right now. A reporter would also have connections and a better idea of how to look into this kind of thing.
