Still nothing. →

Okay. I’m likely overreacting, and it’s probably nothing. A couple days from now, things will be fine, and I’ll feel stupid for even doing this, I know. But I’m too anxious right now not to do something.

I don’t even know how to start writing this, but I’ll begin with what happened.

This past Sunday evening, I got a really uncomfortable voicemail from my little sister, Samantha. Even though I’ve been at college for nearly two years, she still calls me every weekend to tell me what’s going on back home in Piedmont, despite the fact that there’s almost never anything going on. Except now, it sounds like there is.

I don’t really know what I’m supposed to say about the voicemail. Just listen to it.

I’d be worried about this either way, but at least there’s a possible explanation. For all of my life, my mother has had a health condition called cardioneurogenic syncope, which is basically an occasional, brief loss of consciousness due to a decrease in blood flow to the brain. Sometimes she faints or falls down, and a couple times we had to take her to the doctor after she hit her head. But it’s not the end of the world.

The weirder part is what’s happened since then… or to be more precise, what hasn’t happened: I can’t get anyone to answer the phone. I tried calling Sam back as soon as I got the message, but she didn’t answer. Neither did our neighbors. I tried all of the other numbers I had – Uncle Kyle, Al’s, the diner, even the police – and not a single answer. There’s probably a good explanation, like phone or electric outages, and I’m just upset over nothing. Kristen says everything is fine.

But the fact is, it’s been more than 24 hours, and I haven’t been able to reach anyone in the entire town, or to make sure that Mom is okay. And while I wish I could just go home and check, I don’t have the money for that sort of thing…and even if I did, I’d have no way to get out to Piedmont unless someone picked me up at the nearest bus stop. And I guess this is kind of stupid, but we’ve been talking about blogs in civic journalism, and I thought maybe if I started one, someone might know something.

So if anyone has any idea why I can’t get in touch with a single person in the town of Piedmont, Utah, can you let me know?

  1. I saw the commercial and just had to come and see. Hopefully there isn’t anything wrong so don’t get your hopes down yet, if theres any way I can help please lemme know, you can email me anytime. Everyone seems to think it was a power outage so hopefully thats what happened, but the media is obviously involved in it by now so hopefully they’ll find out what’s wrong. Best wishes.

  4. Hi Andrew, I’m an amateur radio operator in Oklahoma, and my signals visit that area often. Right now there is a huuge storm over Colorado, so the pickings are slim in that direction. I have a friend who is in the Air National Guard in a small town in southern Idaho. (are there any other types there?) I heard from him Sunday, before the weather closed in, and he said they were readying for a huge (to them) operation. (he’s n a group that fly helicopters for various support activities) All they knew at the time was they were to pick up people and material, and take it some distance into Utah. He and a couple of the other guys can, and often do, reprogram their radios to amateur frequencies. (The Army isn’t too wild about it but they look the other way) Lord only knows what the weather will do, but I will be listening…… best of luck, hang in there!

    Reach out and touch…

  6. I’ll help anyway I can. I have contacts in and out of “things”, but you have to be honest with me. I can’t help you if you’re not ready. When you are, e-mail me.

  7. Hey-
I would call the company that provides electricity and telecom to your town. See if you can get through to them (many times these companies are not even in the town they serve) and ask them if they know of any outages or have any explanations. If you cannot get through to the hospital/medical facility in your town, call other medical facilities in nearby towns and see if they have heard of any problems in your town-if there has been a problem in your town they will know, as they will be taking in the folks from your town. I would also call fire and rescue teams in the region and see if you can get through to them, as they share info and use radios to communicate so may be able to help you.

If you have failed to get any info this way, then start to worry. If you cannot get your answers and plan to go back, make sure and be prepared for whatever you might find. Be prepared to take care of yourself, don’t just rush blindly in as if nothing is wrong. Make sure you have food, water, first aid supplies, and sure transportation (meaning, DO NOT hitchhike in or get dropped off). While I do not want to make you worry even more, I would also suggest you bring a few “Survivalist items”: climbing rope, axe or hatchet, radio, flashlights, batteries, binoculars, heavy clothing, sleeping bag, duct tape, toolkit, tent, wet/dry matches, and anything else that you might need given your region’s requirements.

It is NOT common for a whole town to “go dark”. Not without some reason we could all see, not without something we would have learned about on the news. Be careful. And let us know…

  8. Hey There….

Is this for real or some kind of psych out ??

If this is real, its too creepy to not worry…sorry to say that man but I’ve seen too many movies.
I will keep watching your blog so keep it updated.
I’m sure everything will be fine though…:)

  9. According to Google Earth, there is no Piedmont, Utah. This could mean two things - this is a made-up story, or all records of Piedmont, UT have been erased from public record. Perhaps it is a modern-day Roanoke situation.

  10. Always trust your government, at a time like this chances are it’s just some kind of power issue within the town, chances are the local authorities are dealing with it appropriately and there’s absolutely nothing to worry about.

That’s probably why your sister hasn’t called you since, on a side note the liklihood of a zombie invasion is extremely low, i’ve been waiting on one for years and i intend to keep doing so to no avail. Keep us up to date, i may need to gas up my chainsaw.

  11. Hey there Andrew…I used to live in a small town, but unfortunately my family still lives there. Power outages and phone lines being down really frustrate me, especially when it seems that I can never get through to their cellys either so I kinda understand how you’re feeling. And with a voicemail like that it must be awful. Try contacting the police departments in neighboring towns, maybe they have some idea of what’s going on. Or though it seems silly, try to get something delieverd to your home, like those flower services or something like it. Ask them when would it be delivered then call after whatever time they tell you to check on the status of it. They’ll be abvle to tell you if was successfully delivered or if it wasn’t, they’d be able to tell you why not. It may give you some idea of what’s going on, or at least some clue. Keep me posted and good luck.

  14. Wow, this is really strange. What about cell phones? If you’ve been trying landlines, they might have a different effect than your old friends’ cell phone numbers.

  18. I shall pray for your sister’s safety, I have friends online as we speak helping the clues as to what’s going on exactly in Piedmont… The voice message sent a chill down my spine… I have heard that noise before…

  19. OMG, when i found this website I was relieved (for like one second) that someone else has noticed something strange going on in Piedmont. I was suppose to go visit my brother and sister-in-law who live just outside of Piedmont. I called to confirm with Alec (my brother) about when he was suppose to pick me up at the airport thats closest to there and I havent been able to get a hold of him or my sister-in-law. She is pregnant so I was worried something was wrong with the baby so after 2 days of not hearing back I am confused. Alec and Jenni always call and they know I was suppose to come and visit at the end of the week. What is going on ?

Jaslynn on April 16th, 2008 at 6:47 pm
  20. i pulled this off of a medical website…Syncope is the transient loss of consciousness (fainting) and tone in the body that results from inadequate blood supply to the brain. This is a temporary phenomenon and patients usually recover on their own in a short period of time.

Has your mother been suffering from this condition for a long period of time?

GIJoe on April 16th, 2008 at 6:12 pm
  21. What about the hospital in town? They usually have back-up generators and some have their own power supply. also checking with the state police is a good idea. Not knowing where piedmont is definately sets us back… if its close to the state line is it possible to reach a town close to the border?

GIJoe on April 16th, 2008 at 6:02 pm
  22. Wow sorry. i think iknow how you feel… i have a younger sister also. but keep your hopes up and good luck!!! =3

  24. Maybe there was a natural disaster and the town is shut out or maybe someone took the town hostage…This day and age I don’t put anything past anyone

  25. Wow… being away at college & from a tiny town… Either go home & find out, or call a nearby town. Good luck & keep us posted.
