Still nothing. →

Okay. I’m likely overreacting, and it’s probably nothing. A couple days from now, things will be fine, and I’ll feel stupid for even doing this, I know. But I’m too anxious right now not to do something.

I don’t even know how to start writing this, but I’ll begin with what happened.

This past Sunday evening, I got a really uncomfortable voicemail from my little sister, Samantha. Even though I’ve been at college for nearly two years, she still calls me every weekend to tell me what’s going on back home in Piedmont, despite the fact that there’s almost never anything going on. Except now, it sounds like there is.

I don’t really know what I’m supposed to say about the voicemail. Just listen to it.

I’d be worried about this either way, but at least there’s a possible explanation. For all of my life, my mother has had a health condition called cardioneurogenic syncope, which is basically an occasional, brief loss of consciousness due to a decrease in blood flow to the brain. Sometimes she faints or falls down, and a couple times we had to take her to the doctor after she hit her head. But it’s not the end of the world.

The weirder part is what’s happened since then… or to be more precise, what hasn’t happened: I can’t get anyone to answer the phone. I tried calling Sam back as soon as I got the message, but she didn’t answer. Neither did our neighbors. I tried all of the other numbers I had – Uncle Kyle, Al’s, the diner, even the police – and not a single answer. There’s probably a good explanation, like phone or electric outages, and I’m just upset over nothing. Kristen says everything is fine.

But the fact is, it’s been more than 24 hours, and I haven’t been able to reach anyone in the entire town, or to make sure that Mom is okay. And while I wish I could just go home and check, I don’t have the money for that sort of thing…and even if I did, I’d have no way to get out to Piedmont unless someone picked me up at the nearest bus stop. And I guess this is kind of stupid, but we’ve been talking about blogs in civic journalism, and I thought maybe if I started one, someone might know something.

So if anyone has any idea why I can’t get in touch with a single person in the town of Piedmont, Utah, can you let me know?

  2. Okay, this is starting to get really weird. I have a friend in the Navy, and his ship is in Japan or somewhere, and we keep in touch by email. I tried sending email to him about your blog, and what happened and all that, and it kept bouncing as undeliverable. So I tried a test message with just a few words, and it was fine. Other messages were fine. After some experimentation, I found that the only messages that wouldn’t get through had the word PIEDMONT in it. I tested that by breaking up the word, you know, like (P)IED(M)ONT, and one went through — and now I can’t email him at all. Anything I try to send to a “.mil” address doesn’t seem to go through.

What the hell is going on?

  3. I’ve been listening to your sister’s voicemail over and over. I’m not sure what to make of the noises that occur when your sister says, “hi” to your mother. It sounds like furniture moving around. Also….and this is WAY out there…..the response your sister has is almost like she saw your mother and then realized it only LOOKED like your mother. I don’t know. Hope everything works out.

  4. Man, that message pulled hairs up on my arm. I was going to suggest that you contact the towns nearby and see what they might be able to tell you but judging by the responses, you’ve gotta be already on top of that. I hope things are all right, man.

  5. I don’t think your crazy. I think you have total reasons to be concerned. True, maybe this is all coincidence. But if I called my parents home and could not reach them at all I would panic. The fact that you cannot even reach law enforcement is scarey. It is a free country. So why in the USA are we not allowed to enter that part of Utah?????????? Have you considered contacting the F.B.I.? I think if nothing you should be allowed to find out if your Mom is ok! I don’t have a theory on what’s going on there, but it can’t be normal if it’s kept so secretive. I am not a religious person but I will pray all is ok with your family.

  7. Oh my gosh, andrew, i hope everything is okay. My cousin’s girlfriend lives in Piedmont, too, but I haven’t been able to get ahold of anyone to see if she knows anything. =X

  8. I’m sure if you asked any news reporter/station to pick up this story they would be happy to take you down to Piedmont to see what has happened in exchange for your story.

  9. I seriously hope that all is as well as can be expected in your home town and that its just the storm and an over reaction on your sisters part, coincidentally, which is causing all the panic. At any rate this is intriguing.

  10. My mom says that it would have been on the news but the clips still scares the crap out of me i do hope that everthing is alright. My bro in law is in the army and has been sent to calorado, i don’t really think that that would have anything to do with it though.

  11. hey, saw the commercial. i suppose anything’s possible, and i would dismiss it as nothing if it werent for your mother’s condition. you said she’s had this for a while? i dont think your little sis would freak out like that over it. and if you can’t get in contact somethings definitely wrong. i guess if you dissappear we’ll have proof. hope it works out all right. and remember keep a cool head and dont overreact.

  12. um, this is serious i think. i mean people talk about the millatary hiding stuff from us, and you dont know if you can believe it or not. This is proof. plus has anything else happened lately

  13. hey me again, IT almost sounded like your mother did something! that makes me a bit uneasy. but it still doesn’t explain how no one will answer anywhere. this is just something i thought of. keep it posted

  14. Creepy.

  15. I’m not sure what to believe right now, this doesn’t sound right. You would think that if this happened that it would be plastered all over the news!!! if you have proof I’m all over it and would be down to help in anyway I can……..Let me know!!!

  18. First of all, I hope your doing okay with all this chaos. Obviously, you can’t count on the police or anyone that works with the government. There’s no doubt the military has something to do with this, and it must be very bad, considering the fact that they’re hiding it from everyone else. But hang in there, many people are noticing this, so there’s bound to be some research of some type going on RIGHT NOW. And what a coincidence, that this whole ordeal is happening at Piedmont. Of all places, Piedmont! The middle of nowhere, a place where like, a whole invasion of zombies (or something like that) could happen, and nobody would have any idea about it, since Piedmont is soo isolated from civilization…
I’m with you in this, good luck!

  19. I saw the commercial for a second time just this evening and it sparked my interest. After listening to the message and reading your posts it appears that there are two independent issues: your mothers health and the inability to contact anyone in the area. I am very interested to hear what your friend finds out if he is able to make it into Piedmont. It is a very bizarre situation and the only practical connection I can think of is that if some transformer blew nearby, it could have projected something. That idea doesn’t hold up well to me though because Sam did not sound worried right at first when she encountered your mom so something would have had to happen instantly after that moment (blown transformer with projectile) but the screaming was so sudden, as if an assessment of the situation was not needed. What I’m getting at there is that it doesn’t seem related to your mom’s condition because a fall, even a serious one, would not result in a panic. There’s no way of knowing without more information. None of it makes sense yet.

I will keep reading and I hope you are able to resolve the situation. In the meantime just try to stay positive. The commercial and this blog are a great idea. Good luck man.

  20. dang… i tried looking up this website on wikipedia.org and youtube.. and apparently there’s nothing on it… maybe something really IS going on, maybe you should bring some equipment with you on your way to piedmont, like a radio, matches or flint, and all of the basic survival necessities.. maybe even something for safety like an axe or even a firearm. based on what seems to be going on, you can never be too safe

Don on April 19th, 2008 at 9:01 pm
  21. All this is very weird. I noticed something at about 18 seconds of the voicemail. It was right before she said “hey mom” It sounded sort of like (i highly doubt this) a lightsaber. It also sounded like an electrical surge of some sort. Maybe somethng went out?

Damien on April 19th, 2008 at 12:14 pm
  22. We’re all with you buddy. Just hold in there, I’m sure everything is fine. The likelyhood of a government takeover or zombie invasion is way unlikely is way unlikely. When the US government was building the atomic bomb in the 1940s, they took over the town of White Sand, New Mexico, but everybody still knew the town existed, so that can’t be what’s going on. Good Luck

Evin on April 18th, 2008 at 9:06 am
  23. Try sending an express mail letter from the post office and request delivery confirmation. Then you’ll know when it was delivered, or if it’s not. Maybe you should consider going home to check it out. See what you can find out in local towns first. Be discreet!!

jen on April 17th, 2008 at 6:34 pm
  24. This may scare you but i know it is totally impossible. But has nayone seen the Movie “The Mist” by Stephen King? Thsi reminds me of it. especially since it is a small town in the middle of nowhere. Nad for the ppl who said Piedmont doestn exist on Google Mpas try again make sure you spell it right. Cause Peidmont does exist it is a small town near Piedmont Resovoir.
