Still nothing. →

Okay. I’m likely overreacting, and it’s probably nothing. A couple days from now, things will be fine, and I’ll feel stupid for even doing this, I know. But I’m too anxious right now not to do something.

I don’t even know how to start writing this, but I’ll begin with what happened.

This past Sunday evening, I got a really uncomfortable voicemail from my little sister, Samantha. Even though I’ve been at college for nearly two years, she still calls me every weekend to tell me what’s going on back home in Piedmont, despite the fact that there’s almost never anything going on. Except now, it sounds like there is.

I don’t really know what I’m supposed to say about the voicemail. Just listen to it.

I’d be worried about this either way, but at least there’s a possible explanation. For all of my life, my mother has had a health condition called cardioneurogenic syncope, which is basically an occasional, brief loss of consciousness due to a decrease in blood flow to the brain. Sometimes she faints or falls down, and a couple times we had to take her to the doctor after she hit her head. But it’s not the end of the world.

The weirder part is what’s happened since then… or to be more precise, what hasn’t happened: I can’t get anyone to answer the phone. I tried calling Sam back as soon as I got the message, but she didn’t answer. Neither did our neighbors. I tried all of the other numbers I had – Uncle Kyle, Al’s, the diner, even the police – and not a single answer. There’s probably a good explanation, like phone or electric outages, and I’m just upset over nothing. Kristen says everything is fine.

But the fact is, it’s been more than 24 hours, and I haven’t been able to reach anyone in the entire town, or to make sure that Mom is okay. And while I wish I could just go home and check, I don’t have the money for that sort of thing…and even if I did, I’d have no way to get out to Piedmont unless someone picked me up at the nearest bus stop. And I guess this is kind of stupid, but we’ve been talking about blogs in civic journalism, and I thought maybe if I started one, someone might know something.

So if anyone has any idea why I can’t get in touch with a single person in the town of Piedmont, Utah, can you let me know?

  3. I work at an auto repair shop about an hours’ drive from Piedmont-lateley we’ve had several vehicles in for routine maintainence, and quite a few of them have had weird problems I’ve never seen before. The radiator hose, heater hose, and other rubber hoses under the hood have been crumbling and disintegrating at the touch.ALL of these cars & trucks were in or around Piedmont recently.Could this be just a coincidence?

  6. This whole ordeal is really creepy and I would like to say that I very much dislike our government and events like this are the very reason I am leaving america when I turn 18.

  7. Been checking all the satellite images I can find…some of the websites won’t even pull up Piedmont, but I’ve found several other tiny towns, so it doesn’t make sense…can’t get a good picture of anything near there. This is definately wierd.

  9. Holy… I saw your banner show up on a webcomic I was reading, and I at first thought it was just some sort of scam at first… but that voice mail gave me shudders. It did indeed sound like someone came in and was either staggering and hitting furniture or moving something heavy across the floor.

..i dont think I’m going to sleep easy after this. Good luck to you and finding out what is going on.

  11. I’m starting to dislike uniformed idiots. I went in a bit closer and ran into the blockades your friend mentioned - did my best to avoid them and circle around, but I had to take off. Security is tight - without a nice vantage point, its difficult to see anything in the town, and as it is I can only just make out buildings. If there’s something odd, I can’t get close enough to find it. I’m going to look over the rest of the data I have on hand and see if I can’t figure this out. I’ll let you know if I find anything useful, but I don’t have the equipment for this, and I’m not going to try to sneak into town again when there’s at least a hundred soldiers with machine guns patrolling around it.

  13. Okay, this is starting to get really weird. I have a friend in the Navy, and his ship is in Japan or somewhere, and we keep in touch by email. I tried sending email to him about your blog, and what happened and all that, and it kept bouncing as undeliverable. So I tried a test message with just a few words, and it was fine. Other messages were fine. After some experimentation, I found that the only messages that wouldn’t get through had the word PIEDMONT in it. I tested that by breaking up the word, you know, like (P)IED(M)ONT, and one went through — and now I can’t email him at all. Anything I try to send to a “.mil” address doesn’t seem to go through.

What the hell is going on?

  14. I’ve been listening to your sister’s voicemail over and over. I’m not sure what to make of the noises that occur when your sister says, “hi” to your mother. It sounds like furniture moving around. Also….and this is WAY out there…..the response your sister has is almost like she saw your mother and then realized it only LOOKED like your mother. I don’t know. Hope everything works out.
